Sir William Hamilton, KB, PC, FRS, FRSE (13 December 1730 – 6 April 1803) was a British diplomat, politician, antiquarian and vulcanologist who served as the Envoy Extraordinary to the Kingdom of Naples from 1764 to 1800.

Sir William Rowan Hamilton was an Irish mathematician who contributed to the development of optics, dynamics, and algebra—in particular, discovering the algebra of quaternions. His work proved significant for the development of quantum mechanics.
Sir William Rowan Hamilton MRIA, FRAS (3/4 August 1805 – 2 September 1865) was an Irish mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. He was the Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin, and Royal Astronomer of Ireland, living at Dunsink Observatory. Hamilton was Dunsink's third director, having worked there from 1827 to 1865.
Hamilton inspired a remarkable new generation of Scottish philosophers– A C Fraser, John Veitch, William Spalding, and J F Ferrier. All of them admired him greatly and thought he had revitalized philosophy in Scotland from the deadly condition into which it had largely fallen in the first decades of the 19th century.
