At the time of his death, he was married to Ellen Siirola. On February 27, 2023, Mattinson died in Canoga Park, California, at the age of 87. On June 4, 2023, the Walt Disney Company presented a sculpture, featuring Winnie the Pooh characters, to Mattinson's family on the anniversary of his seventh decade-long career.
