Joe Ely (/ˈiːli/; born February 9, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was "one of the main movers" of Austin, Texas's progressive country scene in the 1970s and '80s.
In 2016, Joe is named the Official Musician for the State of Texas, Ely spent 2016 as the reigning "Texas State Musician,” a prestigious one-year designation which he formally accepted in a ceremony at the State Legislature that spring.
