In 1846 Gladstone was created a baronet by the outgoing Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel. Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet, of Fasque and Balfour in the County of Kincardine, died at Fasque House in December 1851, 4 days shy of his 87th birthday, and was buried at St Andrew's Episcopal Church at Fasque.
