Critical care medicine specializes in caring for the most seriously ill patients. These patients are best treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) staffed by experienced personnel. Some hospitals maintain separate units for special populations (eg, cardiac, transplant, trauma, surgical, neurologic, pediatric, or neonatal patients).
We have defined “critical care medicine” as the triad of 1) resuscitation, 2) emergency care for life-threatening conditions, and 3) intensive care; including all components of the emergency and critical care medicine delivery system, prehospital and hospital.

What is Critical Care? Critical care is a type of medicine that is dedicated to evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing life-threatening illnesses and injuries. This type of care often requires more advanced technologies than are available in an emergency room or other medical setting.
Major sections include pathophysiologic features, organization, diagnosis and management, and perspectives of critical care. The clearly written chapters are well illustrated with figures, tables, and diagrams that are appropriate in number and content.
