Sophocles (c. 497/496 – winter 406/405 BC) was an ancient Greek tragedian, known as one of three from whom at least one play has survived in full. His first plays were written later than, or contemporary with, those of Aeschylus ; and earlier than, or contemporary with, those of Euripides .

After the death of his predecessor (456/5 BC), Sophocles became the preeminent playwright in Athens, a title he held onto for the next half a century, practically until his very death at the age of 90 in the winter of 406/5 BC.
Sophocles: the purest artist. Sophocles’ life spanned almost the whole of the 5th century. He is said to have written his last play, Oedipus at Colonus, at age 90. Only seven of his plays, of some 125 attributed to him, survive.
