- Gwangju National Museum. In a suitably magnificent building, the Gwangju National Museum looks like a traditional palace, and sits at the top of a grand stairway.
- Gwangju Museum of Art. Close to the Gwangju National Museum, at Jungoe Park, the Gwangju Museum of Art is home to the Biennale Exhibition Hall and moved into a new main building in 2007.
- May 18th National Cemetery. It seems difficult to believe now, but a generation ago democracy was non-existent in South Korea. There were no national elections for decades up to 1988, after dictator Park Chung-hee, who took over in a coup in 1961, imposed a new constitution in the early 70s.
- Asia Culture Center (ACC) Opened in 2014 after 12 years of planning and construction, this modern and airy cultural centre in Gwangsan-dong, Dong-gu stages music and dance performances, contemporary art exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, festivals and a wealth of events dedicated to Gwangju and Asian culture.
- Penguin Village. One of my favorite places in Gwangju city was the Penguin Village. It’s completely random, with goofy decor and interesting photo opportunities.
- Dwinggul Cave. Dwinggul Cave may not be what you expect! It’s smack in the center of the city, and from the outside, you’d never guess it’s a cave at all.
- Asia Cultural Center. The Asia Cultural Center is a sprawling theater complex (most of which is underground). The campus is vast, with numerous attractions worth seeing.
- Sajik Park. Guitar Street is a little tribute to artists. This street is home to a number of music and guitar-themed cafes, as well as a number of amusing works of art!

Gwangju is a transportation junction of southwestern Korea. It connects with Seoul to the north and Busan to the east by air, rail, and road. It has a subway and is served by a domestic airport to the west of downtown and an international airport at Muan, some 20 miles (30 km) to the southwest.
