Saul Zaentz (/ ˈ z æ n t s /; February 28, 1921 – January 3, 2014) was an American film producer and record company executive. He won the Academy Award for Best Picture three times and, in 1996, was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
For 45 years The Saul Zaentz Company was a fount of great American independent cinema, creating motion pictures of the highest artistic merit. Saul Zaentz produced ten films, three of which won the Academy Award® for Best Picture: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus and The English Patient.
SAUL ZAENTZ. Described by the New York Times as ‘perhaps the last of the great independent producers,’ Saul Zaentz specialized in literary film adaptations that the big studios believed too complex or uncommercial to put on film.
Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of the Saul Zaentz Company, owns exclusive worldwide rights to motion picture, merchandising, stage and other rights in certain literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The Saul Zaentz Company was formed by Saul Zaentz and was the parent company of Middle-earth Enterprises untill ME was bought by Embracer Group in 2022, responsible for selling Peter Jackson the rights to produce The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
