Dr Camille Cole | Faculty of History University of Cambridge. Research Fellow, Jesus College. I am a historian of the modern Middle East, focusing on the late Ottoman Empire. My current research explores how local elites shaped the emergence of capitalism and modern state practice in the Persian Gulf port city of Basra.
I am a historian of capitalism, law, and empire in the modern Middle East and late Ottoman Empire. I earned my PhD in history from Yale University, and held a postdoctoral fellowship at Jesus College, Cambridge before coming to Illinois State.
Camille Cole's dissertation, “Empire on Edge: Land, Law, and Capital in Gilded Age Basra,” was selected as the 2020 winner of the Association for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies (AGAPS) Gwenn Okruhlik Dissertation Award.

Camille Cole. Camille Cole’s dissertation uses a group of Ottoman and Iranian notables – tribal leaders, landowners, and entrepreneurs – as nodes through which to investigate the making of multi-imperial space in what is now southern Iraq.
