Egon Friedell (1878-1938) was an Austrian cultural historian, playwright, actor and Kabarett performer. He wrote essays, books and plays on philosophy, literature, history and politics, and was a prominent figure in the Viennese cultural scene.

A witty and versatile bohemian, he not only wrote plays but often acted in them, particularly at Max Reinhardt 's theaters in Berlin and Vienna.
