Jul 23, 2009 · David Lewis (1941–2001) was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th Century. He made significant contributions to philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, decision theory, epistemology, meta-ethics and aesthetics.
David Kellogg Lewis (September 28, 1941 – October 14, 2001) was an American philosopher. Lewis taught briefly at UCLA and then at Princeton University from 1970 until his death. He is closely associated with Australia, whose philosophical community he visited almost annually for more than 30 years.
David Lewis was an American philosopher and one of the last generalists, in the sense that he was one of the last philosophers who contributed to the great majority of sub-fields of the discipline. He made central contributions in metaphysics, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind.

Seeing why will both showcase some of the power Lewis’s conception of fundamental ontology has in shaping and clarifying metaphysical debates, and highlight a centrally important question that he has (perhaps unintentionally) bequeathed to us.
I will divide the terrain into four parts: Lewis’s fundamental ontology; his theory of metaphysical modality; his “applied” metaphysics (covering such topics as laws of nature, counterfactuals, causation, identity through time, and the mind); and Lewisian methodology in meta-physics.
Oct 16, 2001 · David Lewis, the Class of 1943 University Professor of Philosophy who was a leading figure in his field, died suddenly on Sunday from complications due to diabetes. He was 60. Lewis came to Princeton as an associate professor in 1970.
Lewis propounded a thesis of modal realism: the world we inhabit – the entire cosmos of which we are a part – is but one of a vast plurality of worlds, or cosmoi, all causally and spatiotemporally isolated from one another.
