Charles Boyer. Actor: Gaslight. Charles Boyer studied philosophy before he went to the theater where he gave his debut in 1920. Although he had at first no intentions to pursue a career at the movies (his first movie was Man of the Sea (1920) by Marcel L'Herbier) he used his chance in Hollywood after several filming stations all over Europe.

The success of these and other shows helped to make Boyer a wealthy man in his final years, though the period was sorely tempered by the death of his only son, Michael, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1964.
His long distinguished career included the motion pictures Algiers (1938), All This, and Heaven Too (1940), Gaslight (1944), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), How to Steal a Million (1966), and Stavisky (1974). In 1934 Boyer married British actress Pat Paterson. Their only child, Michael Charles Boyer, died in 1965, reportedly a suicide.
