Shirley Ann Hemphill (July 1, 1947 – December 10, 1999) was an American stand-up comedian and actress. A native of Asheville, North Carolina , Hemphill moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian.

Mabel King, who played Mama on the 1976-79 ABC sitcom, died on November 9, 1999. Mabel had been only 66-years-old at the time of her passing. Her death was ruled to have been caused by complications of diabetes.
