Biography. Wildman was born to Jeffrey and Margaret Wildman (née Poaker) in the Norfolk town of Wymondham. He was christened at Wymondham on 24 January 1621, [1] the youngest of three children. John's mother died soon after he was born, as his father Jeffrey, who was a butcher, remarried (to Dorothie Leverich) on 2 January 1622.

Wildman was of obscure ancestry. Educated at Cambridge, he first came into prominence in October 1647, when he helped to write the first Agreement of the People.
