Feidman is a fourth-generation klezmorim, but was trained as a classical musician. He began his professional career at the age of 20, joining the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he played for nearly 20 years. In the 1970s, with his own groups, he was credited by some as starting the klezmer revival in Europe and the U.S.
