Pierre Samuel du Pont (/ d uː ˈ p ɒ n t /; January 15, 1870 – April 4, 1954) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and member of the prominent du Pont family. He was president of DuPont from 1915 to 1919, and was on its board of directors until 1940.
Pierre S. du Pont was born in 1870 in a DuPont Company house overlooking the Brandywine Creek just north of Wilmington, Delaware. His early years were influenced by the area’s natural beauty and by the du Pont family’s long tradition of gardening.
duPont increased the company’s munitions production from 1 million pounds per month to 1 million pounds per day. duPont manufactured close to 1.5 billion pounds of military explosives during the war, and employed a high of 86,000 workers.
