The Principality of Sealand (/ ˈ s iː ˌ l æ n d /) is a micronation on HM Fort Roughs (also known as Roughs Tower), an offshore platform in the North Sea approximately twelve kilometres (6 + 1 ⁄ 2 nautical miles) off the coast of Suffolk, England.
Sealand’s history and adventure has been defined by armed invasion attempts, the fighting of legal battles, countering a coup d’etat and surviving natural disaster while remaining fiercely independent. From this spirit our national motto was born: ‘E Mare Libertas’ (From the Sea, Freedom).
