  1. Ferdinand Ries (baptised 28 November 1784 – 13 January 1838) was a German composer. Ries was a friend, pupil and secretary of Ludwig van Beethoven. He composed eight symphonies, a violin concerto, nine piano concertos (the first concerto is not published), three operas, and numerous other works, including 26 string quartets.

  7. It was in his capacity as Beethoven’s pupil and interpreter that Ferdinand Ries made his first public appearance as a pianist in Vienna on 1st August 1804. Performing in Vienna’s baroque Augarten, he played Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (Op. 37) with a cadenza all his own.
