At different times of Indonesia's history, the nation has been designated as having regions that do not necessarily correlate to the current administrative or physical geography of the territory of the nation.

    • Lesser Sunda Islands. The Lesser Sunda Islands are a group of islands located to the north of Australia where they are part of the Sunda Volcanic Arc in the Java Sea.
  2. Provinces are the first-level administrative divisions of Indonesia. It is formerly called the first-level provincial region (provinsi daerah tingkat I) before the Reform era. Provinces have a local government, consisting of a governor (Gubernur) and a regional legislative body (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Provinsi).
