Apr 30, 2019 · The federal subjects of Russia refer to the constituent units of the Russian Federation according to the constitution of Russia. The constitution of Russia recognizes 85 federal subjects since March 18, 2014, although two of the most recent subjects are recognized by most states as part of Ukraine.
Russia is divided into several types and levels of subdivisions. Federal subjects of Russia prior to the additions of six occupied Ukrainian regions in 2014 and 2022. Since 30 September 2022, the Russian Federation has consisted of eighty-nine federal subjects that are constituent members of the Federation. [1] .
The following is a list of 83 of the 89 federal subjects of Russia in order of population according to the 2010 and 2021 Russian Census. The totals of all federal subjects do not include nationals living abroad at the time of census.
