Serge Lifar (Ukrainian: Сергій Михайлович Лифар, Serhіy Mуkhailovуch Lуfar) (15 April [O.S. 2 April] 1905 – 15 December 1986) was a Ukrainian dancer, choreographer, and one of the greatest male ballet dancers of the 20th century. Lifar was also a choreographer, director, writer, theoretician about dance, and collector.

Biography. Born in Kiev in 1905, Serge Lifar discovered dance in 1920 after accompanying a friend to the studio of Bronislava Nijinska, the sister of the great Nijinsky. It proved to be a revelation…. He became her student until the day she joined Serge Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes in Paris.
Part of the troupe was sent on military or artistic missions, and even as far as Australia—a real expedition in those days. On the way back, Serge Lifar discovered Bali and Indonesian dances, which were to be a source of inspiration in the future. Paris was occupied by German troops in June 1940, the swastika hung from the Arch of Triumph.
