Aerial view. Fa Hien Cave, also Pahiyangala Cave, is situated in the district of Kalutara, Western Province, Sri Lanka and according to a rural legend, named after an alleged resident during historical times, namely Buddhist monk Faxian (also Fa-Hien, or Fa Hsien).

Pahiyangala caves lie in Yatagampitiya, which is a remote village about 5 km away from Bulathsinhala (40 km along Piliyandala-Horana road), in the Kalutara District. Excavation has proved that these caves were inhabited by prehistoric cavemen some 37,000 years ago.
Admire the 40 ft long reclining Buddha Statue, near the monastery. Remember to stick within the boundaries of the protected area. Possessing evidence that goes back to the prehistoric era of the island, the Fa Hien Caves in Kalutara is also known to be an abode of a famous travelling monk.
