May 31, 2019 · High Road to Taos Directions: From Santa Fe, drive north on US Highway 285/84 for approximately 16 miles to NM Route 503, or Nambe Road; go right. Route 503 continues 7.5 miles to County Road 98 (Juan Medina Road). Here, go left and continue about 2.5 miles to Santuario de Chimayo.
Along N.M. 76, the byway follows through the creased and crinkled badlands, polka-dotted with scrubby piñon and juniper, with the Jemez Mountains enormous on the horizon. Cruise on through the villages of Talpa and Ranchos de Taos & end the trip at the Saint Francis Plaza in Ranchos de Taos.

But that would be cheating yourself out of exploring mountain villages, learning about the region’s history or admiring the beautiful views.
If you are planning to do a round-trip to Taos from Santa Fe or Albuquerque, the Low Road to Taos runs through the canyon, often adjacent to the Rio Grande. The two combined provide a scenic introduction to the culture, history, and natural beauty of northern New Mexico.
