This is the site of a fortification build by the Confederates and later occupied by Union forces. The 1861 Battle of Belmont, fought to overtake the Confederate stronghold here, marked the opening of the Union's Western Campaign.

Columbus-Belmont State Park sits on the high ground above the Mississippi River, in western Kentucky. From here, you have first-rate views of the river from picnic spots and walkways, plus a nice playground area, and Civil War history to boot.
