The Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion, established in 1996, recognizes extraordinary contributions to the public understanding of religion. The award goes to individuals whose work has a relevance and eloquence that speaks, not just to scholars, but more broadly to the public as well.

The American Academy of Religion is pleased to announce the winner of the 2024 Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion, Randall Balmer, who holds the John Phillips Chair in Religion at Dartmouth College.
The winner of the 2022 Marty Award is Anthea Butler, the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prof. Randall Balmer is this year's recipient of the American Academy of Religion's Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion.
