A con man who has tried to turn over a new leaf, Honest John Calhoun (Randolph Scott) is the owner and operator of a dance hall in the north of Canada. John has hoped to evade both the police and his past, but his history catches up with him when his ex-girlfriend, Belle De Valle (Gypsy Rose Lee), appears in his venue as a member of a dance troupe.
