Although better than the worst animated features out there, THE CAT RETURNS, so far, ranks as the weakest of the Studio Ghibli films. Let me start by saying that The Cat Returns is not the best of Ghibli and Miyazaki had almost nothing to do with it. If Miyazaki had directed or even written it, the film would have been as great as Totoro or Kiki. This movie is pretty much Whisper of the Heart as a Spirited Away style fantasy.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of 25 critic reviews are positive for The Cat Returns, and the IMDb rating is 7.1/10. The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus reads, "Sweetly charming and beautifully animated, The Cat Returns offers anime adventure suitable for the very young and young at heart."
