Prescription: Murder is the first ever episode of Columbo. It first aired on February 20, 1968 and was directed by Richard Irving. The episode stars Peter Falk in his first appearance as Lieutenant Columbo and Gene Barry as the series' first murderer, Dr. Ray Fleming.
The Columbo character first appeared on stage in 1962 in Prescription: Murder with Thomas Mitchell in the role of Columbo. In 2010, Prescription: Murder was revived for a tour of the United Kingdom with Dirk Benedict and later John Guerrasio as Columbo.
Psychiatrist Ray Flemming is having a passionate affair with an actress, Joan Hudson, and uses her to help him murder his wife, Carol, and to make it appear the work of a vandal.
