Anne-Claire (Romy Schneider) is a poor Parisian seamstress who dreams of being affluent, occasionally allowing herself to drift into a fantasy where she has a wealth of servants and riches. She meets Monpti (Horst Buchholz), an immigrant street painter who is even more impoverished than she. The two fall in love and enjoy the lights and music of Paris together.
