Film was reviewed at SXSW.
The home invasion horror has been fertile ground for filmmakers over the last decade, with the likes of Them, The Strangers, Inside and Funny Games ensuring that we all double-check the locks before heading to bed at night.
The jet-black comedy of Michael Haneke’s effort aside however, they’ve all been somber affairs. Which makes the new film from director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett so refreshing, as You’re Next is an entry in the sub-genre that’s as funny as it is terrifying.
The film starts out in typical horror fashion, with a pre-credit sequence in which mysterious figures dressed in black and wearing creepy animal masks lay siege to a house, killing its inhabitants and scrawling the film’s title on the wall in blood.
A director and writer at the top of their respective games give the home invasion movie a hugely enjoyable makeover.
