It was based on a 1965 novel by science fiction writer Jerry Sohl, best known for writing episodes of The Outer Limits, Star Trek, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and as ghostwriter for Charles Beaumont on three episodes of The Twilight Zone.

"Night Slaves" is directed in a style that reminds me of sci-fi thrillers of the 1950s. Watching this movie, I am especially reminded of the classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." In keeping with the boundaries imposed by television, the direction of "Night Slaves" is characteristically low-key.
Ridiculous films like Night Slaves just proves again and again that 70's and 80's TV Movies are an undiscovered treasure trove of weirdness. Almost universally, TV movies from this time take themselves so seriously that you just have to get behind it, no matter how outlandish or cheesy it gets.
