Sylvester Stallone gives the most resonant performance in Reach Me. Playing Gerald, a political blogger who paints abstract art in his free time, Stallone stands out from the crowd by expelling his pent-up rage in the form of insults like, “You're a fart catcher!” If only the other 64 characters in the film looked up from their navels long enough to exude that kind of personality, Reach Me would be a fairly entertaining existential romp.

Self-seriousness plagues writer-director John Herzfeld's tone deaf ensemble piece. Reach Me picks up as a motivational book of the same name “goes viral,” inspiring an electric group of characters to change their lives and seek out the tome's reclusive author. Colette (Kyra Sedgwick) becomes a devotee in her final days at a women's penitentiary; Rapper E-Ruption (Nelly) hits the morning talk show circuit to talk up its revelations; Roger (Kevin Connolly) is Stallone's stringer, sent on assignment to track down the man behind the book; Frank (Thomas Jane) is a cop who doesn't play by the rules... and spends every night in confession begging Father Paul (Danny Aiello) for mercy; Dominic and Thumper (David O’Hara and Omari Hardwick) are two mob muscles woken up to the fact that, maybe, what they do for a living is morally bankrupt.

Reach Me thinks it's spinning a Crash-like everything-is-connected web. It's closer to Kentucky Fried Movie, if it were a heavy-handed sketch dramedy feature. A scene where Eve (Elizabeth Henstridge), Colette's aspiring actress niece, is set to film her first sex scene with A-lister Kersesy (Cary Elwes) starts with awkward tension and sitcom laughs. By the end, Eve is a rape victim, grappling with how to deal with her sex offender costar. Herzfeld's can't wrangle dark comedic choices into anything coherent, and his actors aren't screenplay whisperers able to tame it further. Reach Me is out of control.

Normally a theme or impending event would tie all these characters together. Herzfeld opts for straight up schmaltz, turning Reach Me feel like the “Very Special” episode of a sitcom that doesn't exist. Characters cross paths, give impassioned speeches about their radical life changes, and spout New Age self-help Mad Libs because they have to. No c...

  7. tigerfish50 8 January 2016. 'Reach Me' exemplifies the potential pitfalls of a vanity project. Financed by crowd-funding, this mess of a movie demonstrates how producers and bean-counters can prevent an egotistic writer/director from delivering a self-indulgent, audience-tormenting fiasco.
