    • Space Station 76 movie review (2014) | Roger Ebert
      • "Space Station 76" is too comfortable with its near-plotlessness, its 94 minutes feel padded, and there are moments where it runs out of gas (rocket fuel?), yet the tone is so special that it turns what might've been aesthetic crimes in another film into misdemeanors.

Space Station 76 is, as you can likely gather from the trailer, one of the oddest movies of the year. What you might not guess is that it’s also one of the funniest and most charming. Its mish-mash of 1970s aesthetic and science-fiction is quirky and bizarre, but never overwhelmingly so. In fact, the characters grab you so quickly that the anachronisms mostly just fade into the background, allowing you to accept the world as is and focus on the dramedy that unfolds before you.

Jack Plotnick gives us a '70s version of a space-faring future, but manages to stay far away from wearing out the gimmick. It’s definitely the main draw, at first, watching Patrick Wilson’s gruff Captain Glenn use an old school cigarette lighter on the bridge surrounded by VHS technology and panels of blinking lights reminiscent of the original Star Wars.

But it’s not soon after that we’re introduced to the cast – Liv Tyler’s Jessica, the new officer on board, Marisa Coughlan’s catty Misty, Matt Bomer’s hard-working and under-appreciated Ted, Jerry O’Connell’s womanizing doctor Steve, and Kali Rocha’s Donna, Steve’s snooty socialite wife. But the real heart of the movie comes along with Kylie Rogers’ Sunshine, the sensitive and kind little girl of Misty and Ted’s. Rogers’ performance is so genuine and innocent that it’s hard not to find her adorable and sweet. Space Station 76’s greatest accomplishment, and the reason it’s so successful, is that once the players are introduced, the movie simply lets them live.

Space Station 76 is a great surprise. It’s hilarious with an oddball visual aesthetic, but it also manages to be a true character drama. So much so that the gimmick of the '70s future style quickly fades into the background and lets you enjoy the drama – and of course, the comedy – play out. It’s not a movie that will appeal to everyone’s sensibili...
