  2. Jul 31, 2013 · The film's human actors aren't much better. Like the film's voice actors, Harris, Gleeson, and Azaria are never given a chance to prove that they're played by people with a sense of comic timing. Azaria fares the best of this bunch, and as in "The Smurfs," he takes every chance he gets to ham it up.

The success of the first live animation Smurfs film obviously meant a sequel in the works to cash in. This was playing over and over and my kids grooved on its repeated viewings.

First things first. This review comes with a caveat. I never saw the first Smurfs movie. So if you have a problem with me reviewing the second installment of this franchise, this is your chance to back out. Continue no further. Because there's a chance that I'll miss some character complexities and cinematic nuances if they were, in fact, established in the first installment.

But I asked my son what happened and then read the Wiki page, so I'm good, right?

How I even managed to miss* (*dodge) the first Smurfs, having three kids, is beyond me. Fortune lands when least expected. But, likewise, atrocity strikes when we're least prepared. And Smurfs 2, with all of its needless three dimensions, struck me right between the eyes. As animated fare goes this summer, we've gone from the unnecessary-but-charming Monsters University to the derivative, mediocre Turbo to...this. This steaming pile of misery.

The Smurf films drive 65 in the same lane as other animated updates like The Chipmunks and Marmaduke; by which I mean they involve animated creatures annoying the absolute s*** out of their accompanying grownups. Which, in retrospect, means that central theme was what we all once watched as kids. In fact, the whole "this guy annoys the holy hell out of the other guy" kid genre never really died out, as Spongebob has proven. If anything though, this sequel, unlike its counterparts, has moved passed that aspect a little bit as the Smurfs are no longer the bane of Pat Winslow's (Neil Patrick Harris) existence.

I realize I never let loose with the Smurf-speak in the review so: Smurf this and the Smurf it rode in on.
