Jade is an umbrella term for two different types of decorative rocks used for jewelry or ornaments. What is Jade? "Jade" is a cultural term used for a very durable material that has been fashioned into tools, sculptures, jewelry, gemstones, and other objects for over 5,000 years. It was first used to manufacture ax heads, weapons, and tools for scraping and hammering because of its toughness.
Although the gemstone we call jade actually encompasses two distinct minerals, jadeite and nephrite, they share a similar appearance and toughness. Not surprisingly, the legends and lore these properties inspired apply to both types of jade.
The name jade comes from the Spanish expression piedra de ijada—literally “stone of the pain in the side.” Early Spanish explorers named it after they saw natives holding pieces of the stone to their sides to cure or relieve various aches and pains.
