Oct 10, 2014 · Dracula Untold. First, some good news: "Dracula Untold," a sort of "Batman Begins" prequel, isn't as tacky as it sounds. There are glimmers of a brooding and icky horror epic scattered throughout the film, particularly in its surprisingly romantic, matte-painting-esque backdrops and impressionistic vampire's-point-of-view shots.

Dracula is one of the most frequently adapted literary characters of all-time. So it’s hard to believe there’s anything left to be told.
The title’s a sleight of hand, of course, with Gary Shore’s directorial debut introducing a new take on the familiar vampire. This is Dracula reborn as dark superhero, and while some of the Gothic trappings still remain, the horror has been largely replaced in favour of action and adventure.
Initially, it appears to be a more historically-grounded take on the count; Luke Evan’s is Vlad the Impaler, the Slavic prince notorious for his acts of brutality on the battlefield. Yet he’s not presented as a monster – his grisly act of impaling the dead was a necessary evil, a way of inspiring fear in his enemies and ensuring the safety of his people. Vlad is an honourable man, adored by his citizens and loved by his wife and son. This is Dracula at his most human and humane.
Dracula Untold is an entertaining action-adventure romp, which repositions the famous vampire as a dark superhero. The action is well-staged and often stylish, but some underdeveloped characters and mishandled mythology stop it from capitalising on the full potential of its exciting premise.

Giving the origins of Dracula a movie has some good potential. Luke Evans does a commendable job. Dracula fighting the Turks could have been another 300. This is nowhere near as good. The battles are neither fun nor suspenseful. Dracula is almost Superman and should easily defeat the Turks by himself.
