Apr 28, 2021 · On 1 July 2021, the Protection Of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPI Act) comes into full force and effect. While the Act was signed into law on 19 November 2013, the majority of its sections were only implemented on 1 July 2020, with a one-year grace period.

The POPI Act brings South Africa in line with international data protection laws and is based on many of the core principles of data protection that are found in data protection laws around the world.
The Act applies to anyone who keeps any type of records relating to the personal information of anyone, unless those records are subject to other legislation which protects such information more stringently. It therefore sets the minimum standards for the protection of personal information.
POPIA or POPI was promulgated on 26 November 2013. The Protection of Personal Information Act is intended to promote the right to privacy in the Constitution, while at the same time protecting the flow of information and advancing the right of access to and protection of information.
