I’m particularly drawn to the story of John DeLorean, seeing as how I owned one of the DMC-12 sports cars that bear his name for over a decade. From that experience, I can assure you: rumor, innuendo, myth, and straight-up falsehoods followed John Zachary DeLorean, his company, and his elegant stainless steel-body, gullwing-door cars for years after his death in 2005. Framing John DeLorean offers a compelling, balanced account of both the transcendent accomplishments of the Detroit legend as well as his catastrophic personal and professional failures – told through a clever mix of interviews with those closest to him, real-life archival footage, and dramatic reenactments with Alec Baldwin playing a spot-on DeLorean.

Interestingly, Baldwin is featured as both himself discussing DeLorean – be it in the makeup chair or before or after shooting a scene – and of course in-character as the Detroit-raised carmaker. Sometimes he’s giving his personal insights on how he approached the role, and at others, he gives his opinion on DeLorean, including a revealing personal interaction with him recounted later in the film. Baldwin looks eerily like John in the reenactment scenes thanks to some convincing prosthetic makeup and manages to sound a good bit like him too. He had to in order for the film to work, really, given the movie’s use of archival footage of the real John, and he resoundingly succeeds.

Framing John DeLorean will be quite revelatory to those who only know of him as the man behind the car from the Back to the Future movies. DeLorean’s real life was movie-like – something the film acknowledges. From a young engineer at Packard to a risk-taking success story during his meteoric rise to prominence at Pontiac and General Motors (all fueled by the way he hoodwinked GM executives into greenlighting the GTO and unwittingly kickstarting the Muscle Car Era) to a maverick who started his own car company in a war-torn area of Northern Ireland to his front-page fall in a cocaine-smuggling scandal, DeLorean’s story was larger than life.

Where and how Framing John DeLorean chooses to end its story is a key question the film’s participants themselves ask, and the movie answers it with reverence and a bit of humor. It’s unlikely to be as emotionally affecting to the average viewer as it was to someone who got to “live the dream” for so many years, as the DMC-12’s marketing tagline pu...
