Topaze is a 1933 American pre-Code film directed by D'Abbadie D'Arrast and starring John Barrymore and Myrna Loy. [1] It was based on the 1928 French play of the same name by Marcel Pagnol.

It is a sophisticated and cynical take on modern industrial society and how vice is often rewarded and virtue punished. Barrymore plays Prof. Auguste A. Topaze, and at first it looks like his character is nothing more than a take off on Emil Jannings' Immanuel Rath of The Blue Angel.
Refusing to give the boy exemplary marks, Topaze is fired from his position. Through a stroke of odd fate, he’s then hired by the boy’s father Phillipe and paid handsomely to endorse a new water curative called Sparkling Topaze.
