  1. Oct 17, 2014 · The Book of Life. “The Book of Life” bedazzles your eyes and buoys your spirits as it treads upon themes most commonly associated with the macabre universe of Tim Burton. But instead of being gaga for ghoulishness, this Mexican fiesta of animated splendor is packed with visual delights far more sunny than sinister as they burst forth as if ...

  2. March 20, 2021. age 12+. Violence, sexism, just junk. The Book of Life So much hate. Non-stop insults, tons and tons of unnecessary violence. Put sexist ideas into my kids’ minds that weren’t there before. Flow was awful- just non-stop heavy action. I can’t believe this movie had an editor.

A charming tribute to Mexican culture and its Day of the Dead holiday, director Jorge R. Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro's The Book of Life follows three childhood friends – Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) – whose romantic fates become the subject of a wager between two married deities: La Muerte (Kate del Castillo), who oversees the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba (Ron Perlman), ruler of the Land of the Forgotten.

If Manolo, La Muerte’s champion to win Maria’s hand, succeeds then Xibalba must stop meddling in human affairs, but if Xibalba’s choice Joaquin wins then he finally gets to rule the Land of the Remembered.

Manolo, who wants to be a singer, hails from a long line of famous bullfighters, but he’s proving to be a disappointment in that regard to his father as he refuses to slay the bull. Macho man and town protector Joaquin has his own set of daddy issues, having grown up in the shadow of his fallen military hero dad. Maria, meanwhile, is no wilting flower waiting to find a husband having been raised to know kung fu (because that’s what was apparently taught in convents in the 19th century).

Manolo’s attempts to win Maria’s heart and hand in marriage ultimately leads to a fantastical journey into the Land of the Remembered, encounters with his ancestors, and valuable if textbook lessons learned by all.

The Book of Life is one of the most glorious-looking animated movies in recent memory, chock full of vibrant imagery, wit, and nifty song choices. While its story may be by the numbers, it still has plenty of heart and much to offer filmgoers.
