Something Different gives us a refreshing glimpse into the creative mind that created a new cinema in the classic and unsurpassable Daisies. While others left the country, Chytilová continued to fight for artistic freedom in a regime that was never really sympathetic to her work and only grudgingly allowed her to continue making films.
Something Different tells two different stories, one of a discontent housewife and another of a nearly-retired gymnast. It is a frank depiction of everyday life, turning training sessions and domestic routine into something frustrating and dull.
One dutiful mother progressively becomes a frustrated woman who is the only one assuming the family responsibilities of working at home and looking after her only son, whereas her husband works all day, does not appreciate his wife's efforts and the only thing he does by the time he gets home is to read the newspaper and watch soccer matches.
