    A babysitter (Nancy McKeon) suspects that a young boy (Sean Astin) is being physically abused by his mother (Patty Duke Astin).

    "Please Don't Hit Me, Mom" was originally produced as an "ABC Afterschool Special." Although it aired in prime time as an "ABC Theater for Young Americans" presentation, it finally aired as an "ABC Afterschool Special" on January 19, 1983.

    After its initial release, social workers who specialize in child abuse cases have cited the film as a learning tool where child abuse cases are now successfully prosecuted in a court of law once a successful case is established, and also involves local law enforcement & case workers who officially document child abuse cases.

    While Sean Astin was filming a scene where his character was being abused by his mother (played by his mother, Patty Duke), Astin found it hard to cry and would laugh hysterically instead because it reminded him of situations that their family had been in.
