Mar 24, 2000 · What I do know is that "Waking the Dead" has a good heart and some fine performances, but is too muddled at the story level to involve us emotionally. It's a sweet film. The relationship between Sarah and Fielding is a little deeper and more affectionate that we expect in plot-driven melodramas. Advertisement.

Fielding Pierce lives the life of an aspiring politician - in 1972 he's serving in the Coast Guard (trying to avoid Vietnam in the most honorable way), and by 1973 he has entered law school. Along the way he falls in love with Sarah ...
Synopsis. It is 1972. Young Coast Guard officer Fielding Pierce is passionately drawn to Sarah Williams, an idealistic activist. She becomes his great love, and he becomes hers: "We will never be apart," Sarah writes him, in a letter. But, in 1974, fate brutally intervenes when Sarah is murdered in a car-bombing.
