A feisty, independent young woman, Damophilia Illington (“Phil” for short, hence the title), the daughter of a progressive university professor, is devastated by the sudden death of her father. The town’s banker, an arrogant stuffed shirt, wants to marry Phil and has himself declared her guardian.

Phil For Short. U.S., 1919. The daughter of an eccentric professor of Greek antiquity, Damophilia (Evelyn Greeley) has never been one for convention. Shortening her name to Phil, she manages the family farm in overalls and short bobbed hair much to the horror of the local busy bodies.
Professor Illington, an aged Greek scholar, has named his daughter Damophilia, but she prefers "Phil" for short. After he dies, Phil goes to live with banker Donald MacWrath, who plans to marry her, and his old maid sister Eliza.
