The Man in the Iron Mask (French: L'Homme au Masque de Fer; died 19 November 1703) was an unidentified prisoner of state during the reign of King Louis XIV of France (1643–1715).
A film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel The Vicomte de Bragelonne, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in a dual role as the title character and the villain. The film follows the four musketeers as they uncover the mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask and plot to overthrow King Louis XIV.

The man in the iron mask was a political prisoner, famous in French history and legend, who died in the Bastille in 1703, during the reign of Louis XIV. There is no historical evidence that the mask was made of anything but black velvet (velours), and only afterward did legend convert its material.
