In his office one day, a young woman named Laura MacDonald arrives. She was sent from the Metropolitan Opera House, where she had studied, and asks John is he will sponsor her. An ambitious young woman, she has mapped out every single detail, and has John in awe of her before she even sings her first song.
John Hayden, the artistically-minded son of a Chicago meatpacker, takes over the family business when his father dies, then marries Martha Lane, the daughter of his father's biggest rival. Martha turns out to be a selfish, ambitious woman, and John finds the kinship his marriage lacks with Laura McDonald, a beautiful opera singer.
