The Monk: A Romance is a Gothic novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796 across three volumes. Written early in Lewis's career, it was published before he turned twenty, and he withheld his name from the first edition.
The Monk, written when Lewis was 19, was influenced by the leading Gothic novelist, Ann Radcliffe, and also by stronger contemporary German Gothic literature. Its emphasis on horror rather than romance, its violence, and its eroticism made it avidly read, though universally condemned.
Shocking, erotic and violent, The Monk is the story of Ambrosio, torn between his spiritual vows and the temptations of physical pleasure. His internal battle leads to sexual obsession, rape and murder, yet this book also contains knowing parody of its own excesses as well as social comedy.

A crowd gathers at the Capuchin church in Madrid to hear the famed monk Ambrosio speak. There, the cavalier Lorenzo meets and develops feelings for young, virtuous Antonia. He decides he must marry her.

The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796, is considered one of the most influential works of Gothic fiction. The novel was initially met with mixed reviews, with some critics condemning it for its explicit content and others praising it for its sensationalism.
