Mary was a first-century Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus. She is a central figure of Christianity, venerated under various titles such as virgin or queen, many of them mentioned in the Litany of Loreto.
Who was Mary of Nazareth? It depends on which Mary you’re talking about. There were two: a Jewish peasant girl living in a backwater province of the Roman Empire, and; the semi-goddess Virgin Mary, in Christian churches all over the world. This page describes the first one.
