Lonesome Dove was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, winning seven. The series was also deemed Program of the Year by the National Television Critics Association, as well as Outstanding Dramatic Achievement.
Lonesome Dove is a 1985 Western novel by American writer Larry McMurtry. It is the first published book of the Lonesome Dove series and the third installment in the series chronologically. It was a bestseller and won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

- Tommy Lee Jones is a real cowboy. The actor, who owns a ranch in Texas, refused to have a stunt double do any of his character's riding scenes. Jones saddled up and did everything himself.
