TALL IN THE SADDLE is a very typical John Wayne western of the mid 1940s. Wayne plays a graceful, good-looking stranger who arrives in a new town to start a new job, only to discover that his boss has been murdered, shot in the back by persons unknown.
Upon its theatrical release, the film received generally good reviews and was successful at the box office, earning $2 million in rentals. The film was Wayne's second of a six-picture contract with RKO and the first with the producer Robert Fellows, with whom Wayne later formed a production company.
